Tonight, we are back home for a performance at The Barns by violinist Lara St. John. Lara is the Artistic Advisor for our 2017-2018 Chamber Music series, curated by my colleague Lee Anne Myslewski. When you work for the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, it’s not all opera all of the time. And that can be a beautiful thing. (Check out this livestream preview from just a couple of hours ago!)
And now for the 13th installment in ASQoD*, perfect for this eclectic day that is part opera, part Czardashian Rhapsody, with an adorable iguana thrown in. (Watch the livestream.:))
“It is better to know some of the questions than all of the answers.”
James Thurber
Questions are critical. We sometimes formulate them glibly and spend all our energy on finding answers. But we only get the answers to the questions we ask. So ask wisely.
Is it “Which aria will make me more competitive?” or rather “What can I sing that will get to the core of what I have to offer?”
Can we replace “What will the panel choose for the second selection…?” with “How can I populate my audition page with only things that I am always eager to sing?”
And of course, “Why am I not getting hired… What’s wrong with me?” must become “How do I find the audition opportunities that are the best fit for where I am in my career?”
“Live your questions now, and perhaps,
even without knowing it,
you will live along some distant day
into your answers.”
Ranier Maria Rilke
