ASQoD

Yes, friends, audition season is upon us. There’s so much work to be done. Updating resumes and rep lists, filing applications, cleaning up aria notebooks, nailing down travel, scheduling appointments. And while you’re doing all of that and more, we administrator types are trapped in our own logistic circle of hell. Reviewing said resumes, fielding thousands of emails, updating website code and database fields, scheduling pianists and monitors, confirming flights and hotels. All necessary and unavoidable minutiae. But this year, let’s not get lost in it.

This October, I’m committed to keeping my head in the important part of this game. And I invite you to follow along – here on the blog, on Twitter (@kimpwitman) and maybe even on my neglected podcast. (Well, probably not, but if I say it often enough, maybe it’ll happen?…)

We’re going to try to remember why we do this, how to do it better, and why it matters. Starting on October 8 (our first audition day in LA) and ending on October 30 (our final day in NYC), I’ll submit an ASQoD (Audition Season Quote of the Day) for your amusement.

Even though tomorrow’s the proper kick-off, I can’t resist getting an early start.

The small man
Builds cages for everyone
He
Knows.
While the sage,
Who has to duck his head
When the moon is low,
Keeps dropping keys all night long
For the
Beautiful
Rowdy
Prisoners.

(Hafiz)

I will never be a sage, but I will continue to do my level best to drop keys for the beautiful rowdy prisoners who bring music into my life. In bocca al lupo for audition season! See you tomorrow.
