Karol Szymanowski’s only full-length opera, King Roger, was performed in a concert version at the temporary Meadow Center in August 1982. it was only the second time this opera had been performed in the U.S., and it was scheduled in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Szymanowski’s birth. (I stumbled onto this dissertation recently – click through if you want to learn more about this fascinating and rare opera!)
Earlier in the summer, Szymanowski shared the centennial spotlight with Stravinsky in a concert at The Barns that incolded preview excerpts from King Roger as well as Stravinsky’s Berceuses du chat, Elegy for JFK, and Lyke-Wake Dirge Cantata.
