The following list was compiled from the arias listed on audition applications of singers who were heard during this fall’s WTOC audition tour. The number in bold refers to the number of singers in this voice type who listed each aria. (This does not refer to the arias actually heard in auditions; that list will follow in December.)

Not a single "Una donna"? I'm amazed!
Not one. And only one "In uomini" in the whole list. We didn't hear either one during the actual auditions.
Pleasantly surprised to see the Heggie. Not really suprised by the top couple on the list.
How much do you think this list is a function of the age and voice types of the singers who gravitate to the Wolf Trap program?
These lists certainly are indicative of the emerging artist / young artist demographic. Our Studio Artist aria list (coming soon, I promise!) better reflects the college-age demographic. And, as singers mature into heavier repertoire, they move into more late-19th-century repertoire than is indicated here. Also, because we require one aria either by Mozart, Handel, or Rossini, that skews it a little.
Not a whole lot of operetta on this list. What do you think about using the Gilbert & Sullivan scena "The hours creep on apace . . . A Simple Sailor" for an English selection? Should it be offered as a sixth "music theater" piece, or can it stand alone as an English aria? I love using this scene because it's dramatic, it uses accompanied recit, and it's got a few high notes at the end.
G&S selections can certainly stand on their own as English offerings, if well-matched to the rest of the list. We do often hear "Simple Sailor" but didn't this year. Geez, I don't think we heard a single G&S aria.
