Elizabeth Taylor was quite active at Wolf Trap in these early years*, and she must’ve been thrilled to see the Wolf Trap debut of Blitzstein’s Regina – an opera based on the play in which Miss Taylor had so much success, Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes. (*Elizabeth Taylor is still an director emeritus of the Wolf Trap Foundation Board.)
This production of Regina was moved to the temporary Meadow Center following the spring 1982 fire at the Filene Center. Richard Woitach conducted and Adelaide Bishop directed (with young assistant Anne Ewers, recently of Utah Opera and now CEO of the Kimmel Center). The set from Lyric Opera of Kansas City was loaned to Wolf Trap free of charge, in a wonderful collegial gesture acknowledging the difficulties in rebounding from that spring’s devastating fire.
